Friday Mailbag - 1/22/21
Failure is a part of innovation – perhaps the most important part." - Curt Richardson (CEO of OtterBox [a company that makes cell phone cases])
Well, that’s it. No more Trump in the White House. Bye, loser.
Now onto more important things: a new episode of 20 in 20, my hardcore drumming preferences, and selvedge denim.
20 in 20 EPISODE FOURTEEN is LIVE!
What can I say? I blew it. I skipped an item on my list and only reviewed 19 things. Shameful. [The Giant from Twin Peaks] “I’m so sorry.” If you can stand to invite me into your AirPods for the week, you might wanna check Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Buzzsprout. Thanks! Here’s what I talked about:
AND NOW TO THE MAILBAG…
Loyal N.E.H. reader, Forrest, asks:
Fast hardcore: blast beat or gallup?
Thank you for asking, Forrest. Now we all know I’m a big fan of fast hardcore. In fact, it’s one of my favorite subgenres of one of my favorite genres of music. Neat! But I’m no drummer, so I’ll admit I had to G—gle “gallup + punk drumming” to properly answer this question.
And my answer is…both? I like all of it! Bands like Minor Threat, Void, The Repos, and Knife Fight use the so-called gallup beat to great effect. Blast beats, on the other hand, belong more to the worlds of grindcore and powerviolence. I love those subgenres, too! Before I had even heard Minor Threat, I was listening to local bands like Hewhocorrupts, KungFu Rick, Tower of Rome, and Organz. The manic precision of the blastbeat really spoke to 15-year-old Pat, and now blastbeats are coded into my DNA.
Not sure where I’m going with any of this. I apologize for my non-answer.
Loyal N.E.H. reader, Pat (no relation), asks:
If there is one garment you’re really pining for right now, what would it be?
Great question, Pat. This year, I plan on buying less clothing than ever before. That being said, I’m pining for a pair of heavyweight black selvedge jeans. My favorite Chicago shop, Mildblend Supply Co., has several fine options.
The pair I’ve really got my heart set on comes courtesy of Iron Heart. They’re 25 oz., straight leg, sanforized, made in Japan selvedge denim with black warp/black weft that’ll fade to gray. Full disclosure: they’re $450. That’s a fuckton of money to spend on any one garment, and I probably won’t buy them.
I do think about them a lot, though.
Got a question? Feel free to comment on this post or e-mail me at newexperimentalhours@gmail.com. Thanks!
